Yellow tail butterfly fish

Scientific name : Chaetodon xanthurus


Small butterfly fish, white with an orange band on the back of the body, broken by a white stripe on the tail peduncle. Black reticulated pattern on the sides. A black spot with white edge on the nape. 14 cm. Encountered normally along the external reef. Easily confused with Chaetodon mertensii, can be distinguished by the reticulated colour pattern on the sides and by the nape spot with clear edge.


Habitat: Reef external slope

Distribution: Western Pacific
