White spotted puffer fish

Scientific name : Arothron hispidus

Medium size puffer fish, light brown in colour with large white spots. Concentric white lines around the eye and the pectoral fin (not always present). Longitudinal white stripes on belly. Yellowish fins. 48 cm. It feeds on algae, plants, invertebrates. The colour pattern, with large white spots and often with white rings around pectoral fins and eyes, is difficult to confound. Confusion still possible with Arothron caeruleopunctatus, that has diffused blue spots and black rings around the eye.

Associated organisms
Often observed while resting on large sponges (in the above picture Phyllospongia sp.) or on soft corals (here Sarcophyton sp.).
