White finger frogfish

Scientific name : Antennarius nummifer


Small frog fish, variable colour, often on tones of red, yellow, brown, covered with short skin flaps and with fouling. Illicium nearly as long as the second dorsal spine, esca made up with short filaments. Second dorsal spine without membrane. Distinct tail stalk. Below the soft dorsal fin usually there is a rounded spot, coin shaped. Prominent pectoral fin rays, often white tipped. 12 cm.
Similar to the other small frog fishes (Antennarius coccineus, Antennarius randalli). Distinctive are: the dorsal spot, toward the former the tail with a well shaped caudal peduncle, toward the second the dorsal fin shape, with a 3rd spine well separate from the soft part.
Few colour variations. This species often appears heavily fouled.

Associated organisms
Normally associated with algal tufts, hydroids, often with abandoned human objects.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon, Reef external slope

Distribution: Indo-Pacific, Red sea
