Two-eyed coral fish

Scientific name : Coradion melanopus


Small butterfly fish (15 cm), white with 4 vertical brown-orange bands. Second and third bands are connected ventrally, the third can be larger. The fourth band has a central part light or dusky. Black spot on dorsal and anal fins.
Living along the external reef, in sponge rich areas. Sponge feeder.
Coradion altivelis has no false eyes, Coradion chrysozonus has one on the dorsal fin. The spot on anal fin and the different colour of the fourth band are diagnostic characters for C. melanopus.

Associated organisms
With Porifera, its only food.


Habitat: Reef external slope, Sand

Distribution: Western Pacific
