Swimmer crab

Scientific name : Thalamita cf. picta


Red-orange swimmer crab. Large claws, carapace with 2 prominent lateral spines. 8 lateral spines per side, rows of spines along the claws. The last pair of legs is flattened, in a fin. Large eye with longitudinal dark lines. Carapace lenght 6 cm.
Identified from Charybdis spp. (e.g. Charybdis sp. 3) by the carapace shape with lateral spines, but also by the environment: Charybdis is often found on corals, Thalamita always on sandy bottoms. Portunus pelagicus is larger and differently coloured.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
