Stimpson's snapping shrimp

Scientific name : Synalpheus stimpsoni


Alpheid shrimp living in association with featherstars. Claws are clearly asymmetrical. The colour is highly variable, with background colour almost transparent or dark olive green, markings as longitudinal green or brown lines, or as scattered yellow spots. 3.5 cm.
Five Synalpheus species are described as crinoid commensals, but all are considered synonims of S. stimpsoni. The colour can change, it is easily idntified by the host (normally the alpheids are burrowing shrimps).

Associated organisms
Always associated with the crinoids Comantula purpurea and Comanthus timorensis. It is found on the oral disc, or on the lower part (in contact with the substrate).


Habitat: Reef external slope

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific
