Square crab

Scientific name : Quadrella sp.


Small square crab, smooth. Large claws. Anterior edge of the carapace and first claws segment with a series of pointed spines. Variable colour, brown to yellow, but it could be different species. Some specimens have fluorescent legs joints. Carapace lenght 2 cm. Claws shape and size, and the spines along the claws edge are distinctive. Actually the species we photographed could be more than one.
Different colurs could be intra-specific variability, due to the association with different hosts, or species differences.

Associated organisms
A commensal crab, associated with soft corals (Chironephthya), black corals (Anthipates), gorgonians (Annella).


Habitat: Deep reef, Reef external slope

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
