Spotfin lion fish

Scientific name : Pterois antennata

Lion fish with a pattern of alternating broad and narrow dark red bands on the body. Long supraorbital tentacles (antennae). The pectoral fin has long white rays, joined only at the basis by a blue spotted membrane. 20 cm. Often resting in caves or holes during the day. It feeds on fish and crustaceans. The blue spots on the pectoral fin are a useful diagnostic. Also the body colour is different from Pterois radiata, that has only broad red bands. Pterois volitans has pectoral fin with a deeply incised membrane reaching the tip of the rays.
The colour pattern and the antennae are almost identical in Dendrochirus zebra, that has short pectoral fins.
