Spot tail butterfly fish

Scientific name : Chaetodon ocellicaudus


Oval body, medium size (14 cm), diagonal black lines, perfectly round black spot on caudal peduncle.
Living in lagoon, back reef and reef front, in areas with a good coral cover. In pairs or small shoals, sometimes mixed with the more common species C. melannotus.
Very easily confused with Chaetodon melannotus, it can be distinguished for the missing black spot on anus and for the rounded spot on the tail peduncle.
Being an obligate corallivorous, can be used as indicator species

Associated organisms
Feeds almost exclusively of the leather corals Sarcophyton and Synularia. Therefore is found in areas with a good cover of those corals.


Habitat: Back reef, Reef flat, Reef front

Distribution: Western Pacific
