Sponge crab

Scientific name : Dromia dormia


Large crab, brown colour, white or pink claws tip. Dome shaped carapace, covered with thick and rough hair. Short conical lateral spines. Usually covered with a sponge or a piece of soft coral. Carapace lenght 16 cm.
It is the largest sponge crab.

Associated organisms
Uses to carry on its back a piece of sponge or soft coral, that it crops to fit its needs. The sponge is held in position by the last pair of legs.


Habitat: Back reef, Deep reef, Reef external slope, Reef front

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
