Short finned lion fish

Scientific name : Dendrochirus brachypterus


Lion fish with fan shaped pectoral fin, short rays that can be divided at the end.Variable colour, the body has normally red-brown fading bands, but yellow specimens exist. The pectoral fin shows a pattern of concentric bands, sometimes with spots. Supraorbital tentacles (antennae), only in young specimens. 17 cm.
The differences with Dendrochirus zebra are: the fading banded colour pattern of the body, the missing antennae, the concentric bandes on pectoral fins.

Associated organisms
Often associated with sponges during daytime. In the below photo a young specimen with supraorbital tentacles.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon, Sand

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
