Shaggy frogfish

Scientific name : Antennarius hispidus

Medium size frog fish, with short skin filaments giving it a shaggy appearence. Variable colour (white, yellow, brown, black), usually with dark stripes and radiating lines around the eyes. Illicium about as long as the second dorsal spine. The esca is a large oval pom-pom. 18 cm.
Possible confusion with Antennarius striatus and Antennarius sp. Apart the stripes (more numerous in A. striatus, more sparse in A. hispidus, more similar to elongated oval spots in A. sp.), the obvious difference is the shape of the esca: worm like in A. striatus, pom-pom like in A. hispidus, shrimp like in A. sp.
Deep water specimens have bioluminescent bacteria living on the lure, that make it glow in the dark, more attractive for fishes.
