Rhinoceros file fish

Scientific name : Pseudalutarius nasicornis


Very strange file fish, oval shape, white colour with 2 longitudinal brown lines toward the back. The tail has a black spot in the center. The dorsal spine is in an unusual position, anterior to the eye. It moves in pairs, in a pair one of the partners (we do not know if the male or the female) is usually larger, deeper bodied, and with shorter snout. 19 cm.
We used the genus name Pseudalutarius, even if disagreement exixts, and some authors use Pseudalutarias, Pseudaluteres or Pseudaluterus.

Associated organisms
Often found hiding in vertical position, head down, close to seagrasses, sponges, sea pens.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon, Sand

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific
