Regal angel fish

Scientific name : Pygoplites diacanthus


Medium size angel fish, up to 25 cm long. Extremely distinctive colour pattern, made of yellow, blue, black and white alternating vertical bands. One of the more colourful reef fish. The juvenile is similar, but with a large false eye on the dorsal fin. The colour pattern is unique. The Indian Ocean form has yellow head, while the Pacific form has a typical blue shading. Usually the vertical stripe have a regular disposition along the sides.

Associated organisms
Often found close to sponges, or anyway in environments where its food is abundant.


Habitat: Deep reef, Reef external slope, Reef front

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
