Pteraeolidia ianthina
Scientific name : Pteraeolidia ianthina
Elongate, thin, with clusters of cerata regularly spaced along the body. Colour can variate from yellow to green to blue (see further on this page). 10 cm.
Cannot be mistaken.
Associated organisms Occasionally feeding on hydroids, like other aeolidacea can incorporate the symbiotic zooxanthellae of its prey, and transfer them undigested on the cerata. The zooxanthellae continue to live in symbiosis with the nudibranch, that receive extra nutrition from the photosynthesis products.
It is tought that an adult Pteraeolidia does not need to eat, but can receive all the necessary energy from the symbiotic microalgae. The zooxanthellae do propagate within the nudibranch tissue, and use the solar energy also thank to the position of the cerata, horizontally disposed.
Habitat:
Lagoon, Reef flat
Distribution:
Indo-Pacific
