Porcupine fishes

Scientific name : Diodontidae

Purcupinefishes are tropical and sub-tropical marine fishes, easily recognizable thanks to their round body covered by sharp and strong spines that can be erect; the body is inflatable by swallow of water as a defence mechanism. The eyes are round and very big, the mouth is equipped with a single plate of fused teeth in each of the upper and lower jaws.
They are medium to large sized fishes, and some species can exceed fifty centimetres of length.
Some species are poisonous, due to the accumulation of tetrodotoxin in their liver.
They feed primarily on hard-shelled invertebrates, crushed by the means of the beak.
