Phyllodesmium briareum

Scientific name : Phyllodesmium briareum


Translucent white colour, body thin and elongate, with many long cerata. Through the transparent wall of the cerata it is possible to see the content (partially digested food). 4 cm. Colour and shape of the cerata are distinctive. The closest species is Phyllodesmium longicirrhum, larger.

Associated organisms
Often with its main food, the soft coral Pachyclavularia violacea. This species can incorporate the zooxanthellae living in symbiosis with its prey, and transfer them on the cerata undigested. The zooxanthellae continue to live in symbiosis with the nudibranch, that receive extra nutrition from the photosynthesis products.
