Panda butterfly fish

Scientific name : Chaetodon adiergastos

Medium size (16 cm) butterfly fish, white with yellow fins and dotted brown lines. The popular name is due to a large black spot covering the eye. Black spot on nape.
Living on back reef, reef front and along external reef, mainly in areas densely covered with soft corals. Unlike most butterfly fishes is active during the night. Often in daytime can be observed while resting under large corals. Rare in our area.
The panda eye is a good diagnostic. The background colour and the missing spot on caudal peduncle distinguish it from Chaetodon lunula, with which can share the daytime shelter.
