White body with brown saddle like markings. Gills and rhynophores with variously shaped red and purple markings. Rare, living along the external reef. This is part of a white and brown species group, including also Nembrotha lineolata, Nembrotha purpureolineolata e Nembrota chamberlaini. N.rutilans is identified by the brown saddle.

Associated organisms
Usually with ascidians like Rhopalaea spp., Clavelina spp., Oxycorynia fascicularis, its food.
