Masked banner fish

Scientific name : Heniochus monoceros


Large (23 cm) butterfly fish, white with 3 black bands. The first cover the head (with white drawings), the second starts behind the dorsal filament. Yellow dorsal and caudal fins. Brown knob on forehead.
Living in bay and lagoon, and along the external reef, often in dead coral areas. Feeds on benthic invertebrates, mainly polychaetes.
Identified from other Heniochus spp. for the acute but short dorsal filament. Compared with the more similar Heniochus singularis, this has yellowish posterior sides, brown knob, the central band behind the dorsal filament.


Habitat: Reef external slope

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
