Map puffer fish

Scientific name : Arothron mappa

Large puffer fish, light brown in colour, with irregular black blotches and a highly variable pattern of white and black spots and lines. A constant are the black and white lines radiating from the eye. 65 cm. Feeds on algae, sponges, mobile invertebrates. Confusion possible with Arothron stellatus and Arothron caeruleopunctatus. The radial lines surrounding the eye are a good diagnostic. The former is finely spotted but whithout any particular pattern around the eye, the latter has dark concentric rings.
