Magnificent shrimp
Scientific name : Periclimenes magnificus
Amazing shrimp, transparent colour with red edged white markings. In details, it has white bands surrounding the carapace and the first 4 abdomnal segments. A large white spot on the abdomen hump. Also the eye stalk, the claws (often beared in a crossed position) and the large antennal scale (duck-bill shape) are white. Tail white with purple stains. 2,5 cm.
Many transparent Periclimenes species can be confused (Periclimenes venustus, Periclimenes holthuisi, Periclimenes sarasvati) In the larger specimens, the white bands with red border are easy to see. Smaller individuals have a less definite colour pattern, more difficult to identify. In all cases, the white "crossed" claws and the white duck bill (antennal scales) are a good diagnostic.
Associated organisms Usually associated with anemones (Dofleinia armata, Macrodactyla doreensis) or Caryophillydae hard corals, (like Catalaphyllia jardinei), or tube anemones (Cerianthus spp.), or sea pens.
It can act as a
cleaner. In Lembeh strait we observed an association with the snake eel Ophichthus melanochir. The cleaning behaviour can explain only partially this association, because actually a small colony of P. magnificus seems to stay permanently around the eel, neber seen attempting to prey on the shrimps.
