Lysiosquillina lisa
Scientific name : Lysiosquillina lisa
Large spearer, normally the male's head is seen coming out from the sand, orange-brown in colour, oval white spotted eyes, prominent antennal scale with white stripes and mottling. 25 cm. More commonly seen on black volcanic sand. An ambush predator on fish and crustaceans. Possible confusion with Lysiosquilloides mapia, uniform orange in colour and with cone tipped eyes. Lysiosquillina maculata is grey and with shorter eyes.
Associated organisms Often shrimps are seen in L. lisa burrow, Periclimenes imperator, Stenopus tenuirostris, Thor amboinensis and a small white Alpheidae shrimp. The shrimp gains protection and access to the food discarded by the mantis shrimp. We do not know which the benefit for the mantis shrimp, if any. We would exclude a cleaning action (mantis shrimps, provided with many appendages, can perfectly clean themselves).
Habitat:
Back reef, Lagoon, Sand
Distribution:
