Long horn cow fish

Scientific name : Lactoria cornuta


Large species with 2 obvious horns, pointing forward, over the eyes, and 2 spines pointing backward in the back part of the body. Brown colour with blue spots. Adults have a very long tail. 46 cm. It feeds on invertebrates, that exposes blowing water on the sand. Similar to Lactoria fornasini, the latter distinguished by a large thorn on the back. The juveniles Lactoria are the typical cube shaped dice fishes. It is very difficult to identify the juveniles, when the spines are not yet developed.

Associated organisms
Sometimes with seagrasses.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon, Sand

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
