Lizardfishes
Scientific name : Synodontidae
Lizardfishes are characterized by a reptile-like head, with a large mouth full of slender, sharp teeth, placed even on the tongue. They have a slender, almost cylindrical, body, with a single dorsal fin, accompanied by a small adipose (skin flap) fin near the tail base. Usually the skin, with large scales, help the camouflage in the environment.
Synodontidae are generally small fish, although the largest species may be about 60 centimetres long.
They are bottom-dwelling fishes, living from the surface up to 400 meters of depth, in tropical and sub-tropical seas, and some species may live also in brackish waters. They live on, or almost buried inside, soft bottoms, and voraciously feed on small fishes.
