Lion fish

Scientific name : Pterois volitans

Large lion fish, with a white and dark red zebra pattern. The pectoral fin rays have a deeply incised membrane following up to the tip, giving them a feathery aspect. The same applies for the spiny rays of the dorsal fin. Supraorbital tentacles (antennae) with a flattened expansion. 38 cm. Recently a population is appeared and is reproducing along the USA East Coast, from Florida to New York, following probably an accidental invasion from home aquariums. Often during the day can be found in small caves. A fish and crustacean predator. This is a venomous species, llike all scorpion fishes. Even though seldom fatal, the dorsal spines sting is extremely painful.
