Humphead banner fish

Scientific name : Heniochus varius


Medium size butterfly fish, raised dorsal fin, side almost completely dark brown (no white band between ventral and anal fins). Adults with horns above the eyes and a striking forehead knob.
In lagoon and along the reef front and external reef, in areas rich of coral, its main food. It feeds also on other benthic invertebrates. Less active during daytime, when hovers next to sponges and crevices.
Easily distinguished from other Heniochus, and in particular from Heniochus pleurotaenia of the Indian Ocean, for the brown body, without a white band between ventral and anal fins.
