Holoturian harlequin crab

Scientific name : Lissocarcinus orbicularis


Small swimmer crab, the last pair of legs is modified in fins. White and brown colour, the colour pattern can be reversed (brown with white spots or white with brown spots). Carapace edge almost smooth, the space between the eyes sligthly pointed. Carapace lenght 3 cm.
Quite similar to Lissocarcinus laevis, the latter larger, reddish and host of anemones. See also Lissocarcinus sp..

Associated organisms
Always in association with holoturians (gen. Bohadschia), on which it lives as a commensal. When threatened it can enter the host's anus.


Habitat: Coastal bay, Lagoon, Sand

Distribution: Indo-Pacific
