Hedgehog seahorse
Scientific name : Hippocampus spinosissimus
Seahorse long up to 15 cm, quite thin, long snout, spines. Variable colour, normally between orange and brown, sometimes with saddles. The crown with 4-5 spines is another useful diagnostic character. This species belongs to the histrix species complex, often misidentified as Hippocampus histrix . This latter is more thin, with sharper spines and more elongate snout.
Associated organisms Often living among algal tufts, or attached to various substrates (abandoned ropes, nets) through the prehensile tail. The back can be covered with filamentous algae and hydroids.
