Hartzfeld's cardinalfish

Scientific name : Apogon hartzfeldii


A quite small fish (maximum length: 10,0 cm), which shows a change in color from juveniles to the adult stage. The background color is yellow-gold, with black bands on its sides in juveniles, which tend to fade out in adults; both phases show white dorsal stripes, running from snout to the caudal fin, and two horizontal ones, from the snout to the operculum. In the adults, a small black spot can be seen at the base of the caudal fin.
Can be seen inshore, in small groups among debris or sheltered reef flats and shallow lagoons, and even among the spines of sea urchins.

Distribution: Indo-Australian Archipelago
