Golden grouper

Scientific name : Epinephelus alexandrinus


Though it can reach lesser sizes (maximum length: 40 cm), thsi stout fish is brown, with many ivory stripes on its sides.
it's rather common in outer reef slopes, at depths below 15 m; it also can be found in shallow and sheltered bays and lagoons, and up to 160 m deep. Its feeding habits change with its habitat: at Madagascar, it feeds night and day on crabs, fish and shrimps; at Kenya on crabs, fish, ophiuroids and octopus; in the Red Sea, mostly on fish and crabs.
It might cause ciguatera poisoning.
