Fine-striped snapping shrimp

Scientific name : Alpheus ochrostriatus


Grey colour with thin longitudinal yellow-orange lines along the body. Claws have thicker longitudinal stripes. Two white saddles on 1st and 4th abdominal segments, a white spot on the 5th. 5 cm. A. ochrostriatus belongs to the A. brevirostris species complex, including Alpheus bellulus, Alpheus djeddensis, Alpheus randalli, Alpheus rubromaculatus, Alpheus sp.. All species are quite similar, the thin longitudinal lines and the white saddles are diagnostics.

Associated organisms
This species lives in symbiosis with few goby species. The shrimp, almost blind, digs a large burrow and hosts the goby. In change the fish alerts it of potential predators approaching.
A. ochrostriatus is associated with the goby genus Amblyeleotris and Cryptocentrus.


Habitat: Back reef, Lagoon, Reef external slope, Reef front, Sand
