False clown fish
Scientific name : Amphiprion ocellaris
The typical clown fish, oval, with large rounded fins, orange colour with 3 white bars, the middle one with a bulge forward. A thin black line separates white and orange. All fins are orange with black edge. 9 cm. An almost identical species is Amphiprion percula, the Eastern clown fish or true clown fish, living from Papua to Melanesia. Apart few lesser differences, difficult to evaluate in the environment (dorsal fin higher in A. ocellaris, more spiny rays in the dorsal fin of A. percula, 11 vs. 10), the more obvious difference is the greater extension of the black line in A. percula.
Other species with 3 white bands, in our area, are Amphiprion clarkii (deeper body and black back) and Premnas biaculeatus (thinner white line, fins without black border).
Associated organisms It lives in obligate symbiosis with few anemone species, in particular with Heteractis magnifica (the more common), Stichodactyla gigantea and Stichodactyla mertensii.
