Estuarine stone fish
Scientific name : Synanceia horrida
Elongated stone fish, almost cylindrical in shape. eyes are close, separated by a deep groove. Prominent bony ridges above the eyes, upward mouth. Large verrucae on the sides. Brown or grey colour, more or less dark. 30 cm. Compared with Synanceia verrucosa it is more elongated, with more prominent, closer eyes. Possible confusion with Scorpaenopsis diabolus, the false stone fish, that has horizontal mouth opening and prominent humpback.
Stone fishes are the most venomous among scorpion fishes, their dorsal spines, each connected with a large venom gland, can kill a human.
Associated organisms Often it is covered by algae and hydroids, contributing to camouflage.
