Eight banded butterfly fish

Scientific name : Chaetodon octofasciatus


Small butterfly fish (12 cm), yellow or creamy colour, whit black bands. Actually it has 7 bands on each side, plus another band along the nape and the black edge of dorsal and anal fins).
Usually living in pairs on back reef and on reef front, in areas with a rich hard coral cover. It is an obligate corallivorous.
Easy to identify due to the 7 (8) vertical bands.
Discontinuous distribution. We have observed it along North Sulawesi coast but never in Bunaken.

Associated organisms
Usually associated with branching or foliose Scleractinia (its favourite food).


Habitat: Lagoon, Reef flat

Distribution: Western Pacific
