Dusky grouper

Scientific name : Epinephelus marginatus


This big fish can reach considerable sizes (maximum length: 150 cm). It has a stout body, with well developed snout and mouth; the background color is brown, lighter on the belly, with many white spots.
Solitary and territorial, it prefers rocky bottoms; juveniles can be seen closer to the shore, in rocky tidal pools. It feeds on crabs and molluscs, while bigger individuals feed on fish, mostly reef species.
It's a protogynous hermaphrodite and forms reproductive aggregations.
Utilized as a food fish.


Habitat: Rock, Seagrass beds

Distribution: East Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea
