Durban hinge-beak shrimp
Scientific name : Rhynchocinetes durbanensis
Very long and toothed rostrum, transparent colour with a complicated pattern of red lines, white lines and points, diagonally crossing. Longer claws in males (in the photo a female). 4 cm.
Many other Rhynchocinetes species exist, with a similar colour pattern. R. durbanensis is amongst the commonest. Often confused with R. uritai, the bold white lines, the long and toothed rostrum, with 9-10 spines on the upper dorsal end and 16-18 spines on the lower part are distinctive.
Associated organisms In our area, often it can be found in the cavity of the large elephant ear sponge (Ianthella basta).
