Branching anemone
Scientific name : Actinodendron cf. glomeratum
Large anemone (diameter 30 cm) with large, robust tentacles, densely covered with clusters of vesicles. Grey or greenish colour. It lives on sandy bottoms, in lagoon or in bay. Expanded during the day. Like all the Actinodendron species can inflict very painful stings. It can expell the water that keep it erect and disappear into the sand in less than 1 second.
Confusion exists in the taxonomy of the Actinodendron genus. We used the cf. shortage (for compare), indicating that we are still uncertain about the species identification. According to our criteria, Actinodendron cf. arboreum has erect, branching tentacles, densely covered with vesicles; A. cf. glomeratum has often horizontal tentacles, running on the bottom, and less densely covered with vesicles; Actinodendron cf. plumosum has softer and slender tentacles, even less densely covered with vesicles.
Associated organisms With many shrimps, amongst which Periclimenes holthuisi and Thor amboinensis, and with the crab Lissocarcinus laevis.
