Black spotted puffer fish

Scientific name : Arothron nigropunctatus


Highly variable colour, grey, brown, yellow, sometimes with irregular blotches, always with scattered black spots and larger blotches around eyes and mouth. 33 cm. Easy to identify, by the shape and the spotted colour pattern. It is the commonest species in our area. The Red Sea species A. diadematus, is very similar, but with a more constant mask shaped blotch.

Associated organisms
Often seen sleeping in the barrel sponges.


Habitat: Back reef, Coastal bay, Lagoon, Reef external slope, Reef front

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific
