Banded pipefish

Scientific name : Dunkerocampus dactyliophorus


Pipefish long up to 18 cm, colour pattern with alternating white and black bands, rounded tail with white and red rounds. Usually hovering few centimeters away from the bottom, whit exaggerated snake movement..
Many similar species belonging to the same genus, the main differences are the band size and the tail colour pattern. Tail and tubular snout distinguish it from eel like fishes or sea snakes, that can share the same banded colour pattern.
Often living in pairs, the male incubate the eggs under the belly.


Habitat: Caves and overhangs, Coastal bay, Lagoon, Mud

Distribution: Western Pacific
