DANIELE IOP![]() N. of videos: 76
Daniele Iop started filming the submarine world in 1989; his first equipment consisted of a Sony Video 8 camera and one Sony underwater case with two 50 watts lamps. His early editing equipment for videos was made up of one Panasonic video recorder and of one mixer; it was linear editing, with all its consequent limitations.
During his experience he used 8 mm and HI 8 mm cameras and finally came to digital (DVCAM), which constituted a turning point in reliability and quality, allowing Videosub to widen its horizons. In the video editing field, always managed on his own, he used various linear systems, formed by different types of video mixers, while with the coming of the first non-linear editing systems, he extended his experience to the world of informatics; he began with Amiga (especially for headlining meant for effect), going on with PCs using the first video capture boards. His knowledge of the cinematographic language and of the video editing technique grew through time, dedication and power of observation; in fact, it was sufficient to take the cue from television and, obviously, from cinema, to learn and develop the cinematographic language, especially regarding the ability to synthetize. On the other hand, at that time, there were only a few courses about underwater filming; so, it was fundamental, for Iop’s growth, confronting in competitions and projections, especially when addressed to non-scuba diving public. His passion for videos and unusual places, took him to visit little known destinations as: the Azores, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, the Canary Islands, just to mention some of them. Iop actively works together with other Video and Fotosub lovers, like M. Bortoli, Gian Melchiori, A. Pelliconi, etc. For several years he has been organizing videosub stages, in collaboration with a number of associations and he has been working with some schools for the realization of advertise videos about respect for the environment, legality and about social questions. Furthermore, Iop cooperates with M. Boyer, creating short video inserts for the biology website www.edge-of-reef.com . At the moment he’s publishing his own videos and some tutorials on the website www.videosubitalia.com . He recentely made a series of 4 biology videos, set in the Indopacific waters. He is one of the official images supplier of Genoa’s Acquarium. Among his works: one video for the Lisi War about Languages Globality, for Campolongo Maggiore’s (Venice) “CEOD”, for the review “Airone”, for Kenya’s environment protection authority, for Skelling Islands museum (Ireland), for Nosytour, for Safari Adventure. Iop has been jury president at Acireale Videosub World Championship 2005, member of the jury in several editions of Città di Faenza contest and for Genoa Lanterna D’oro prize 2005. In the Earth’s bowels, far from man’s sight, incredible caverns are hidden, surreal landscapes crossed by underground rivers. Dark and misterious places, underworld’s antechambers, frightful and secret caves, kingdom of magical and evil beings, where nobody dared to enter. Almost wanting to confirm these popular beliefs, swollen rivers used to bring out the caverns a strange creature specimens: similar to snakes, but with legs, white and almost diaphanous, with big red wisps on the neck’s sides; these regions inhabitants, thinking that it was a sort of drake’s puppy, called him “Olm”. 1st prize at Rome Excelsior Prize 1999 ( european Parliament plate, documentaries section) 1st prize at Lugano Biennal Underwater Image Exhibition - Switzerland 2001 1st prize at Rome’s Pelagos 1999 Stones tell Length: 13’ Filmed in: Italy and the Red Sea Lessini mountains, through the fossils they contain, tell us about this area tropical past. Fifty millions of years ago, Tetide, “the great ocean”, used to dominate this place. Like impressive fortresses, the reef barriers used to rose from the sea bottom. Instead of mountain woods, there used to be beaches decorated with high palms, and a luxuriant tropical vegetation used to grow in the inland. 1st prize at “Vendee Atlantique” Festival Sous-Marin – France 2001 Golden palm at Antibes Submarine Image World Festival – France 1999 2000 The hidden face of the Canary Islands Length: 15’ Filmed in: Canary Islands, Spain The Canary Islands are a well-known mass tourism destination, but as soon as you leave the most crowded beaches, you discover the hidden face of the Canary Islands. 2001 Dance of death Length: 5’ Filmed in: the Red Sea An ancient desert legend tells how a magic creature has created life and death in the Red Sea’s waters. The series talks about three transversal arguments about general biology, plus a fourth episode dedicated to a particularly menaced animal group. 1. Symbiosis: to live together The word “symbiosis” comes from Greek and it means “To live together”, referring to the association among different species. In the underwater world, symbiosis relations are more widespread than what one would think... 2. Deception, guess who I am Indonesian - Malayan archipelago: we are in the area known as the marine biodiversity sanctuary. In this environment, between sand and coral, many animals, in order to survive, take a strategy based upon mimic, mimicry, deception. 3. Say it with a colour Colours are, obviously, a fundamental element in the reef barrier’s life. But their biological meaning is less obvious. Why one colour instead of another one? Which is the benefit from the evolutionary point of view? 4. S.O.S. hippocampus On Indonesian coasts, evolution shows all its creativity. Here, new living organisms have evolved to spread all over the seas of the planet. A dive in search of sea-horses and their relatives, with a particular attention to new small pygmy species. 1st prize for the series “Life at the Edge of Reef” at “Vendee Atlantique” Festival Sous-Marin – France 2005 silver palm at Antibes Submarine Image World Festival – France 2004 1st prize at Lugano Biennal Underwater Image Exhibition - Switzerland 2005 3rd place for “Symbiosis” at the “Mamara 2004” – Istanbul, Turkey 3rd place for “Deception” at Vodan 2004 – Slovenia 3rd place for “Save our sea-horses” at Belgrado 8th International Contest – Serbia 2004 Award of Excellence for “Life at the Edge of Reef” at PAF Tachov 2005 – Czechoslovakia The frontier Length: 15’/20’ Filmed in: Trieste, Italy Thinking about the sea, our fantasy goes to far, misterious, unknown places; or it brings us to more familiar places like coasts, or even more familiar places like seashores. Beaches: the nearer, well-known, reassuring sea... but beaches are also the “frontier” with their fascinating world called SEA. 1st prize at Rome PELAGOS 2004 1st prize at “Miti riflessi” – Sicily 2005 Polynesia, the sun in the sea Length: 5’ Filmed in: French Polynesia A homage to these beautiful islands beauties. Sometimes whole sentences, paragraphs, chapters are lost in time’s fogs; and images belonging to our past stay buried in memory’s oblivion. Opening this book’s pages makes words free, which regardless for the flowing of time, soar until the present time, bringing the memory of a past time, wich is so near and yet so far.” 2005 Life at the Edge of Reef Tsunami, the day after Length: 20’ Filmed in: Indonesia 26th December 2004. An enormous earthquake, measuring 9,3 on the Richter scale, the second most powerful earthquake in recent history, broke out along Sumatra’s offshore coasts submerged ridge. The Tsunami wave triggered by the earth’s crust movement hit Indian Ocean coasts, without coming across any obstacles, causing more than 300,000 people’s death. In its progression towards south end east, the Tsunami discharged all its energy against the lands above sea level ( north of Sumatra, Malacca peninsula), sparing the rest of the Indonesian archipelago. 2nd prize at Rome PELAGOS 2005 jury special prize at Antibes Submarine Image World Festival - France 2005 Magical Mediterranean Length: 5’ Mediterranean... a question of magic. 15 billions of years ago, nothing; then a spell, the birth of universe.
