Veined octopus
Scientific name : Octopus marginatus
Medium size octopus, typical colour pattern with dark ramified lines similar to veins. White suckers, contrasted against the usually dark colour of the tentacles. In many colour displays a trapezoidal lighter area can be seen immediately below the eye. Often yellow funnel. Body 8 cm, tentacles 15 cm. Easily identified from the more similar octopuses (Octopus cyanea) for the veined colour pattern.
Different colour displays in Octopus marginatus. The habit to use coconut shells as shelter is common in populations living next to coastal human villages, that can find frequently on the bottom half coconut shells cut exactly in the middle. The younger specimens hide in bivalve shells.
Associated organisms Often this octopus uses as shelter empty Lamellibranchiata shells or coconut shells. Two half coconut shells are kept in contact using the suckers, so strongly that even for a man it is difficult to pull them apart. Excellent protection.

Coastal bay, Lagoon, Sand
