Rough ghost pipefish
Scientific name : Solenostomus paegnius
About 12 cm long, colour from green to reddish brown, covered with many small skin filaments, thin and ramified. The general look is like covered with algae. Adult phase often found in bay or lagoon, in sandy environments. It has a long pelagic larval stage, and settles close to the bottom only for mating and breeding. Similar to Solenostomus cyanopterus, clearly distinguished for the shorter caudal peduncle. When it has many skin filaments can be confused with Solenostomus paradoxus, can be distinguished for the longer and jagged tail, for thinner, shorter and branching filaments, for the uniform colour pattern.
Associated organisms Often settles close to algae or hydrozoans.
