Panda anemone fish
Scientific name : Amphiprion polymnus
A species with a variable colour pattern. In our area it is almost completely black, with 2 white bars, one behind the head, the second, median, turns backward in the upper part. White edges of dorsal and anal fins.
In other areas it can have a third band on the caudal peduncle, the median bar can be only a saddle, the background colour can be a dark orange - brown. 12 cm. A. sebae (Indian ocean species) has always a yellow tail. Possible confusion due to the colour with Amphiprion clarkii, the white edged tail and the shape of the median bar are distinctive.
A. polymnus is a quite aggressive species. When disturbed it can attack the divers, producing snapping sounds with the jaws and sometimes biting.
Associated organisms Obligate symbiotic relationship with the sea anemones Heteractis magnifica, Heteractis crispa, Macrodactyla doreensis, Stichodactyla gigantea.
