Anthogorgia
Scientific name : Anthogorgia
Large fan shaped gorgonians, with free branches, not fused in a net. Relatively large polyps, non retractable, when contracted externally to the coenenchyme have the shape of large buds. Variously coloured: red, brown, pink, blue, yellow. The coenenchyme colour may contrast with the polyps. Max height 1 m. Sometimes confused with Muricella (Anthogorgia polyps are larger) and with Astrogorgia (whose polyps can withdraw in calyces, whose shape recalls the contracted Anthogorgia polyps).
Associated organisms Can be host for Trypterigiidae (Enneapterygius pusillus) and Gobiidae.
