Paracentrotus lividus-Sea urchin

Sea urchin

Scientific name : Paracentrotus lividus

Spherical or slightly flattened body, reaching a maximum diameter of seven centimetres. It has strong spines, variables in colour from brown to reddish or purple; the skeleton is green.
It lives on rocky bottoms and inside Posidonia oceanica meadows, from the first centimetre of depth, and it feeds on algae and marine plants.
Being a great grazer, its abundance strongly influences the structure of algal populations. Demographical explosions may lead to the formation of barrens, portion of substrata without algal coverage, with evident effects on the whole ecosystem.

Habitat: Rock, Sea, Seagrass beds

Distribution: East Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea
