European conger

Scientific name : Conger conger


Massive eel fish. The skin is smooth, without scales. The dorsal, caudal and anal fins are connected into a single ribbon-like fin. It has small pectoral fins. The head is long and sharp, with big eyes. Dark grey in colour, fading to white forward the belly. It may reach a maximum length of three meters.
It prefers shady habitat, and it is a typical inhabitant of caves and wrecks, even if it may lives also on rocky and detritical bottoms. It may be found up to 1000 meters of depth.
During the day time it rests inside tight holes that rarely changes. During the night time, it swims close the bottom, in search of preys.

Distribution: East Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea
