Round bat fish
Scientific name : Platax orbicularis
Rounded compressed body, with prominent brow in the larger specimens, symmetrical dorsal and anal fins. Silver colour with vertical bands, more or less dark. Fins edges fading into a golden-yellow colour. 60 cm.
Brown juveniles, with blotches and spots, mimic colour and shape of a rotten leaf. Juveniles often drifting with detritus, or in shallow waters, in lagoon or bay. Possible confusion with other Platax species, in particular with Platax teira (distinguished by a dark blotch in the anus area), and with Platax boersi (distinguished by more yellow fins and tail and by the tendency to live in larger schools ). Platax pinnatus has concave snout profile.
Associated organisms The juvenile, mimicking a dead leaf, often lives close to detritus masses.
